Hailing from Nanaimo, Dorothy has worked on the water since she was a teenager, cultivating a passion for coastal life that has shaped her career since. She grew up spending summers exploring the island's rugged coastline and working in her family's seafood restaurant. Those years instilled a real appreciation for the richness of BC’s coast and its marine life, and the livelihoods they support. As part of the Strong Coast team, Dorothy works to spread awareness about the need for marine protected areas (MPAs) in BC. Having spent time with fishers through her work at the restaurant, she has seen how the Boots often get pushed aside in favour of the Suits, all to the detriment of the long-term viability of our coastal economy. Outside work, she enjoys beachcombing, fishing, trying out new recipes, and diving deep into the histories of BC’s coastal communities and industries. Strong Coast’s call to “defend our coast” was what drew her to the team, as it resonated with her belief in standing up for the underdogs and ensuring that resources remain abundant and accessible for future generations, so that her children can enjoy the bounty of BC’s waters just as she did when she was young.
